AI SEO agency: what the term covers, and who really does it

“AI SEO agency” covers two jobs that have neither the same deliverable nor the same price. SEO done with artificial intelligence: classic search engine optimisation, part of whose production is handed to language models. And SEO done for AI, often called GEO: being cited in the answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, rather than clicked in a list of links. Three providers will tell you “yes, we are one”, and all three will sell different things — the third having simply added two letters to its home page. Here is how to tell which of the two you are being sold.

Three proposals, three definitions of the same word: that is the problem “AI SEO agency” raises before the question of price even comes up.

“AI SEO agency” today refers to two services that have neither the same deliverable, nor the same price, nor the same proof.

SEO done with AI. This is classic organic search optimisation — keyword research, pages, links, technical work — part of whose production is handed to language models. The agency writes faster, analyses more data, monitors more pages. The intended result has not changed: ranking well in Google’s results. What AI changes is the cost of production, and so, in principle, the price or the volume. It can be checked: you compare rankings before and after.

SEO done for AI. This is different work, often called GEO (generative engine optimization), sometimes AEO. The goal is no longer to be clicked in a list of links, but to be cited in the answer written by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or the AI Overview shown at the top of Google. The levers differ: page structure, verifiable factual data, brand mentions elsewhere on the web, consistency of the entity. And the measurement differs too — there is no “position 3” in a generated answer.

A serious agency does both and tells you which of the two matters for you. An agency that does only one and sells the word for both is the most common case, and spotting it is what the rest of this article is for.

The subject is noisy on LinkedIn, where you read of three- or four-figure rises in searches. The measurement tells a different story. Here are the monthly search volumes in France, taken from the source. The queries are the French searches as typed into Google.

Query 12-month average Latest month recorded Cost per click
agence seo 18,100 3,600 €17.81
geo seo 2,900 1,900 €3.43
agence geo 1,600 1,000 €15.06
seo ia 480 390 €7.35
référencement ia 390 390 €12.24
agence seo ia 260 20 €20.03

Source: DataForSEO, Google Ads data, France, French language. Recorded on 26 August 2026. The “latest month recorded” is July 2026 — Google publishes its volumes with a delay. These figures do not recalculate themselves: if they are used elsewhere, take them again from the source.

Three lessons. The first: « agence seo ia » (“AI SEO agency”) is a small query — 260 searches a month on average, against 18,100 for plain « agence seo ». Anyone promising you a tidal wave on that exact phrase has not opened the tool.

The second: it is a buying query. Its cost per click in advertising, €20.03, is the highest in the table. An advertiser only pays that price to reach someone who is about to sign. Small volume, strong intent.

The third is the least discussed: the real volume is on the GEO side. « geo seo » and « agence geo » together account for 4,500 monthly searches, seventeen times « agence seo ia ». The market started naming the second job — optimisation for generative engines — before agencies had finished renaming themselves.

A proposal that rests on no dated figure is not a proposal, it is a sales pitch.

On the Google side, the work remains that of organic search optimisation: finding the queries that carry buying intent, producing pages that answer them better than those already ranked, fixing what stops the site from being crawled, earning links from sites Google takes seriously. AI speeds up research, the first draft and monitoring. It replaces neither editorial judgement nor the relationships that produce links.

On the generative side, the work consists of making your pages citable: short, self-contained answers to questions people actually ask, figures and dates a model can reuse without getting them wrong, markup that describes your organisation unambiguously, and mentions of your brand beyond your own site — a generative engine is more willing to cite what several independent sources confirm.

The only figure that really separates two agencies on this side is their record of citations, and almost none publish it. To see what such a record looks like, zeros included, Claude Agency — the agency run by the publisher of this site — publishes its own on its AI SEO agency page.

What no agency can honestly promise: a guaranteed ranking in Google, a guaranteed citation in ChatGPT, or a firm deadline. On a young site, organic search produces its first effects in three to six months, and no one controls a third-party algorithm. A firm promise on any of these three points is the most reliable signal that you should walk away.

In France, search optimisation is sold either as a monthly retainer — most often between €800 and €3,000 excl. VAT per month for an SME, more for a site with a large catalogue — or on a time-and-materials basis, by the day. The first model buys an ongoing presence, the second targeted work: an audit, a redesign of the site structure, a content plan, setting up tracking.

To put the day in context, our market grid gives €300 to €700 excl. VAT depending on seniority, with €500 for an experienced profile. These are benchmarks, not the rates of the 399 providers our directory publishes: we only show a provider’s price if they gave it to us themselves. The method is detailed in the AI provider day-rate barometer.

One thing to check before comparing two quotes: ask what the retainer covers in hours of work, not in deliverables. “Four articles a month” says nothing until you know whether anyone still reads what the machine writes. Content published without expert review is the first hidden saving in low-cost offers — and the first cause of content that does not rank.

An agency brings a team: a consultant, a writer, a technician, sometimes a link-building specialist. It is the right choice when the work is broad and has to keep up a pace over twelve months. The overhead is real, and the person who sold you the engagement is not always the one who carries it out — a question to ask at the first meeting.

A freelancer costs less for the same level of skill, and you talk to the person doing the work. They rarely manage, alone, a project that needs content, technical work and links all at once. It is the right choice for a clear scope: an audit, a content plan, setting up citation tracking.

In-house, today’s tools let a marketing team absorb part of the work, provided someone knows how to read the data and make decisions. What is hard to bring in-house is the initial diagnosis and earning links: many companies outsource the first, then keep production in-house.

This trade-off is about SEO and GEO. The same choice arises on any AI project — automation, agents, document assistant — and the criteria there are not the same: AI agency or AI freelancer, which to choose covers it outside the field of visibility.

  1. When you say AI SEO, which of the two do you mean? Google, generative engines, or both. An answer that does not tell the two apart says the distinction is not made internally either.
  2. Show me a site you have helped grow this year. With the name, the queries, and the rankings before and after. A traffic chart with no domain name proves nothing.
  3. Who writes, and who reviews? If the answer is “our AI”, ask who checks the facts. In a regulated field, that is a question of liability, not of style.
  4. How do you measure citations in ChatGPT or Perplexity? The answer should name a method or a tool. “We keep an eye on it” is not one.
  5. What happens if we stop after six months? Content, access, accounts, links earned: who keeps ownership.
  6. Which links will you buy, and on which sites? A provider who refuses to name their link sources exposes you to a penalty you will discover on your own.

These six are specific to visibility. On an AI project in the broader sense — automation, agent, knowledge base, training — seven other questions apply, from data handling to running costs: the 7 questions to ask before signing with an AI provider.

Claude Partners is not an agency: it is an independent directory of French-speaking AI providers. The directory publishes 399 profiles; of the 150 we collected up to 1 September 2026, 5 work on organic search optimisation or optimisation for generative engines. They are freelancers, not agencies — the number is too small for a ranking, and publishing one would mean a ranking of 5. The list below is therefore in alphabetical order, and the order implies neither a score nor a recommendation. Profiles are shown in the language their holders wrote them in.

What is SEO for AI called?

It is most often called GEO, for generative engine optimization. Two other acronyms circulate for the same thing: AEO (answer engine optimization) and AIO. The aim is to be cited in the answers written by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overview, not to be ranked in a list of links.

What is the best AI for SEO?

The more useful question is not which, but for which task. General-purpose models are used for research, first drafts and analysis; specialist tools are used to measure, track rankings and detect technical problems. Content produced by a model and published without review rarely ranks — the value comes from what a competent person adds to it.

How much does an SEO agency charge?

Most often between €800 and €3,000 excl. VAT per month for an SME, more for a site with a large catalogue or a very competitive sector. On a time-and-materials basis, the benchmark is the day rate: our market grid gives €300 to €700 excl. VAT depending on seniority.

Should you drop classic SEO for GEO?

No. Generative engines rely heavily on pages they find by the same means as a search engine. A site that is invisible in Google is rarely cited by ChatGPT. GEO adds a layer of work — being citable, factual, structured — it does not replace the foundation.
